Country Red’s History at Hickory Hill
Country Red was one of the original six wines crafted by Roger and Judy Furrow when they founded Hickory Hill in 2001. Its first edition was an unoaked Cabernet Sauvignon. Growing only one red grape, the only way to have two dry red on the wine list was to age them differently. In 2003 or 2004, the current winemaker, Wendy, was working with Roger and Judy, when the opportunity to purchase some Cabernet Franc and Merlot from local friends presented itself. Wendy urged them to do so, thinking it would be a perfect way to enhance the Country Red. Since then, Country Red’s percentages of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc have fluctuated, but it has always remained an unoaked, Bordeaux blend winning numerous awards including one of our first golds.
