IMPORTANT NOTICE
The picnic area is now closed for the winter. We do not have an indoor space that allows us to meet Virginia’s current COVID-19 requirements. We plan on reopening our picnic area in March 2021.
HHV Picnic Area
Our scenic picnic area overlooks the vineyard and encompasses the winery back porch as well as a patio that connects the winery to the Tasting Room and Gift Shop. We have several picnic areas described here, but please be aware that as the seasons change, all may not be as described here.
We named this Picnic Area for the grapevine that grows nearby and because of its proximity to the main winery door. It is located on the covered back porch of the winery building. This area is about 10’x15.’
We named this Picnic Area as it is the stage for our Sunset Saturday music series. It is located on the covered back porch of the winery building. This area is about 10’x15.’
We named this Picnic Area after the L-O-V-E Letters that are installed in it. It is located on the covered back porch of the winery building. This area is about 10’x20.’
We named this Picnic Area for the nearby Red Maple tree. This area is the largest at about 30’x60.’ You are welcome to bring a disc to toss or other yard games, but please, no one outside your group should join you.
We named this Picnic Area for the enormous White Ash tree that dominates this space. This area is about 20’x30 and has a porch swing installed in the tree.
We named this Picnic Area for the tree that provides the shade. In fact, the tree is so large, we made two picnic areas under its limbs. The ‘Big” in its name is also derived from the picnic table located here. It was crafted by Roger’s father, Roy Furrow, and is made from welded steel pipes. It is big and heavy! This area is about 20’x30’ with a great view of the Vidal Blanc in the vineyard.
We named this Picnic Area for the Poplar tree that is located in this space. It may have one of the best views of the vineyard! This area is about 20’x20.’
We named this Picnic Area for the nearby Wishing Well. While the area is not named for a tree, there is a mix of sun and shade. This area is about 20’x20.’ It has late afternoon shade.
We named this Picnic Area for its proximity to the gate that leads to the picnic area parking lot. There is a mix of sun and shade. This area is about 20’x20.’ It has early afternoon shade.
We named this Picnic Area for the Poplar tree that is located in this space and the fact it is the only picnic area where smoking and vaping are allowed. It too has a great view of the vineyard! This area is about 20’x30.’
The Hickory Tree
We named this Picnic Area for the nearby Hickory trees. It is probably the best spot if you have someone in your group with mobility issues due to its proximity to amenities. This area is about 20’x20.’
Things to know before your trip to Hickory Hill Vineyards
Outside Alcohol
Per VA ABC regulations, outside alcohol is NOT permitted on the premises. This includes but is not limited to wine previously purchased here, other local wines, wine, beer, wine coolers, cider, hard liquor, sparkling wine. Coolers are subject to inspection. Anyone violating this VA ABC regulation will be asked to leave immediately. PLEASE do not try to sneak it in, as violations can cost us hefty fines and may lead to revocation of our winery license leading to permanent closure, and we like doing what we do!
Food
We offer a selection of premium cheese and meat by Boar’s Head along with other lite fare options to enjoy with our award-winning wines. We do welcome visitors to bring their own food. If you choose to bring your own food, please follow these simple rules:
- Food brought from home is to be enjoyed in our picnic area, not the tasting room.
- Please pick up after your picnic. We have trash receptacles as well as recycling bins. If you have more than our bins can hold, please ask for a trash bag (or bring one) so we can keep the grounds tidy for everyone.
Children
We welcome children!
Just keep in mind that this is a working farm and children should be closely supervised at all times.
Pets
We love pets! Unfortunately, due to a few VERY irresponsible pet guardians, we no longer allow visitor’s pets on the estate.
Trained Service Animals are welcome.
We do not allow emotional support or companion animals as they do not meet the definition of Trained Service Animal and do not have the same public access rights.
Self-Guided Wine Tasting Options
What is a self-guided wine tasting?
With this wine tasting option, there is no tasting fee. Instead, you purchase the bottles. Your group will taste the wines at your own pace without a Hickory Hill Associate leading the tasting. The remaining wine can be recorked and taken home.
The wines are grouped in threes. You may request just one group, or two, or all three for your Self-guided Wine Tasting. The tasting will include tasting sheets, pencils, and disposable tasting cups. You are welcome to purchase Hickory Hill wine glasses or bring one from home. To maximize your reservation time, we urge you to preorder your wine choices and we will have it ready for you.
NOTE: On hot summer afternoons, you may consider bringing a cooler with extra space to keep the wines cool.
Self-Guided Tasting FAQs
