Moneta, VA  3/07/18 — The Olympics may be over but medals for excellence are headed to Moneta. Hickory Hill Vineyards earned six medals in the 2018 Virginia Wineries Association Governor’s Cup® Virginia Wine Competition.

Hickory Hill Vineyards’ 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon and Smith Mountain Lake (SML) Redbud, Sunset and Mist all earned silver medals. Bronze medals were awarded to 2013 Cabernet Franc and SML Sweet Red Sail.

“We are proud to bring this recognition to our area as an excellent location for growing cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc, and other grapes that create great wines,” said Wendy Furrow-Scott, winemaker at Hickory Hill. “Every part of our process happens right here on Smith Mountain Lake.”

The Governor’s Cup competition ranks as one of the most stringent and thorough wine competitions in the country. In 2018, over 40 world-class judges sampled just over 440 of the best Virginia wines from 100 Virginia wineries. The best were awarded gold, silver, or bronze status.

Hickory Hill has earned more than 70 medals for its wines in national and international competitions. This latest round of award winners is currently available in the winery tasting room.

“These competitions validate the work we do here to produce great wines, but our greatest satisfaction comes from sharing the wines with our visitors. We know we are successful every time someone enjoys our wine,” Furrow-Scott said.

Hickory Hill welcomes visitors to its picturesque vineyard and tasting room year round. The winery hosts several outdoor events in the spring, summer, and fall, including the award-winning “Sunset Saturdays” live music series.
